Use photographs to remember how to put things back together

When working on home improvement projects or repairs, at some point, inevitably, we will have to disconnect, disassemble, move around and replace stuff before we can complete, or in some cases, even start our work.

More than once, I have been ‘scared’ to move forward with a project, thinking that if I disconnect, disassemble or otherwise mess with whatever it is that is getting on the way, I will then not be able to put it back together later on after the job is completed.

REMEMBER HOW TO PUT THINGS BACK TOGETHER WHEN WORKING ON HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

After going through many of those ‘scary’ and frustrating situations in which I had trouble putting things back together again, the answer may sound obvious, or even stupid to many. However, I can assure you that even now, sometimes, after getting over my ‘fear’ and deciding to move forward, I still make the mistake of starting to break things apart BEFORE making sure I have perfectly documented it with a photograph.

In this day and age, when almost everyone is carrying a Smartphone, the best solution I’ve found to the problem is to take a photo of whatever it is I need to mess with so I know exactly how to put it back together right after. Simple huh? All you need is a camera, which I bet is almost always in your pocket anyway (your phone).

The photographs on this page, show my sprinkler controller and a data jack wall plate I had to disconnect while working in the garage and the home theater installation.

Readers, have you ever run into a similar situation? What did you end up doing? What do you do now to ensure that it does not happen again?
